Jaime and Luke, the dynamic live and DJ duo behind Basscamp, are one of Melbourne’s latest concoctions in the tech house stratosphere. The minds behind ‘Sobremesa’ at Hope Street and ‘Welcome to our Tiny House’ on Skylab have hit the ground grooving with their signature steezed-out take on minimal tech house.

Having been friends since school, and spending hours at the skatepark listening to Hip-Hop, the pair meandered musically as they crossed paths learning woodwind and brass instruments respectively. Following school where their connection became eternal, music was their language and food was their muse. Their culinary escapades were legendary, later inspiring the birth of their "Sobremesa" show, which referred to their relationship which often revolved around going over to each other’s houses for dinner, knowing it was going to be followed by marathon sessions of record mixing and the occasional whiff of amyl nitrate. Hours melted into days as they spun the same four Melbourne techno records, like Pascal's "Moonrocks" on Merriware—an enduring inspiration, so much so that Luke now boasts three copies of this iconic track.

The turning point arrived in early 2019 when Luke, with the intention of gifting his partner Mabel a Korg synthesizer, ended up crafting a song for her. This creative endeavor ignited his passion for music production. With Luke crafting tech-house rollers that Jaime describes as "on the money," the two decided to join forces. "One night in the studio and the rest was history" they say. Luke's prowess in crafting tech-house grooves, described by Jaime as flowing effortlessly from his fingertips, meshed seamlessly with Jaime's decade-long exploration of weirder, more abstract musical realms. Their collaboration aimed to find the sweet spot between Luke's classic dance music approach and Jaime's eclectic musical sensibilities. 2022 then saw their foray into the live performance world, serendipitously creating and performing their first live set at Moniker festival.

Since then, Basscamp’s enigmatic presence continues to traverse the historic tech house waters of Melbourne's ever-shifting musical landscape, navigating the tides of popularity with grace. The duo released their first extended piece ‘Technical Itch’ at the end of 2023, and recently followed up with EP ‘Hype / Whoops’, which has garnered support from top selectors in Naarm and beyond. They also presented a track through Eora based label Lovejoy earlier this year. Their most recent musical endeavour saw them playing live over New Years at Diega festival in Victoria. Basscamp remain dedicated to discovering the perfect harmony between their unique sounds as a duo. The horizon of 2025 looms large, holding the promise of their finest chapter yet.
